What made Sadio Mane furious as Liverpool send Steven Gerrard message

Liverpool suffered a club record fifth successive home loss with a dire setback to near rivals Chelsea on Thursday.

Mason Mount's goal shortly before half-time was enough to condemn the Reds to a desperately dreary 1-0 defeat.

The result means Jurgen Klopp’s side now face an uphill struggle to claim a top-four berth and Champions League qualification.

But there was plenty that went unnoticed or under the radar during the 90 minutes at Anfield.

George a Diamond geezer

Never let it be said George Sephton doesn't keep up to date with the latest football trends.

As the very few inside the increasingly freezing stadium awaited kick-off, the Voice of Anfield popped the Neil Diamond classic Sweet Caroline on his playlist.

The reason? Well, anyone who witnessed Steven Gerra'ds post-match interview after the latest Rangers win in midweek will know exactly what it's all about.

Good times never seemed so good. Apparently. Do you remember those days?

The scream

Liverpool were, by and large, flippin' well rubbish against Chelsea, who didn't really have to do much to earn an important win.

And the frustration among the Reds at another slipshod and slapdash home performance was at times rather clear.

Not least in the first half when, having failed to find Mohamed Salah with an attempted volleyed pass as he intercepted a Chelsea attack, Trent Alexander-Arnold let out a scream that could probably be heard around the city.

He spoke for pretty much everyone associated with club.

Carra goes mad

The Liverpool right-back wasn't the only one to fill the night air with his anguish.

After the match, Jamie Carragher was involved in an on-screen chat with former team-mate Jamie Redknapp over what's going wrong for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Speaking on Sky Sports, Redknapp pointed out it would have been mad to last year say Liverpool would be struggling in this way, to which Carragher replied: "I am going mad!"

Those still inside Anfield after this final whistle only got to hear the former Reds' words boom around the empty vastness - which, even in isolation, were completely understandable.

Mane not happy

Sadio Mane already had enough concerns without being belted in the head by the ball.

But Chelsea substitute Mateo Kovacic decided that would be a good way to help see out the game for the away side.

Mane was less than impressed with the incident and had words with Kovacic while putting his hands around the neck of his grinning opponent and getting right in his face.

Maybe Mane was just checking out how well manicured Kovacic's eyebrows are. Probably not, like.
