What Liverpool's nightclubs can expect from Boris Johnson's announcement about lifting restrictions on July 19

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is set to make another Covid announcement today to update the public on the easing of lockdown restrictions.

While there are not many details on the announcement, it is thought the Prime Minister could confirm Step Four of the roadmap out of lockdown will go ahead.

This means Liverpool's night-time industry could hear its fate today after months of closure due to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions.

Hospitality venues including some of the city 's most popular nightclubs have been forced to remain closed due to not being able to comply with social distancing rules.

Initially, clubs across the country were expected to open from June 21 , but the roadmap is underpinned by four key tests, which act like a checklist that must be met - and they were not.

The tests determine whether the vaccine rollout is going as planned, if vaccines are effective in bringing down death rates and hospitalisations, if case numbers aren’t rising to a level that it becomes unsustainable for the NHS, and if new variants don’t create unforeseen risks.

The rise of the Delta variant prevented the first attempt at England easing all lockdown restrictions including having all legal limits on social contact removed.

Now, just weeks after the delay, Boris Johnson is expected to move the country into Step Four.

It is expected he will confirm the lifting of all lockdown rules from July 19 and this could include an end to masks and social distancing.

Step Four would see remaining closed businesses, such as nightclubs, reopen without social distancing restrictions and no legal requirements for face masks.

A time has not yet been confirmed for the announcement, though previous press conferences have been around 5-6pm and have been broadcast on BBC and Sky News.
