What Liverpool need to qualify for Uefa Champions League knockout stages

Liverpool are well placed to progress from their Champions League group as winners after a nigh-on perfect start to the campaign.

The Reds are eight points clear at the top of the Premier League having dropped just two points all season, but they are not assured of a place in the last 16 of the Champions League just yet.

Jurgen Klopp's men have lost just once in all competitions all season - a 2-0 defeat in Naples - but still sit top of their group ahead of Napoli's visit to Anfield on Wednesday evening in what will likely be a straight shootout for top spot.

Liverpool beat Napoli 1-0 in a group-stage nail-biter last term to ensure they advanced to the knockout stages en route to Champions League glory in May. Alisson Becker enied Arkadiusz Milik in time added on to preserve the lead and keep Liverpool in the competition at the expense of the visitors

Here are the current standings in Group E

Champions League | Group E

Group E results so far

  • Salzburg 6-2 Genk

02/10/2019

  • Genk 0-0 Napoli
  • Liverpool 4-3 Salzburg

  • Genk 1-4 Liverpool

05/11/2019

  • Napoli 1-1 Salzburg

What Liverpool need to qualify

Defending champions Liverpool will qualify as Group E winners if they beat Napoli at home on Wednesday.

Both teams will reach the knock-out phase regardless of the result at Anfield if Salzburg fail to win at Genk.

Salzburg need to win their last two matches and hope Liverpool fail to pick up a point or Napoli do not win in either fixture.
