What Lewis Hamilton needs to seal sixth F1 world championship title at Mexican Grand Prix

With just three races left of the Formula One season, it looks increasingly likely that Lewis Hamilton will go on to clinch his sixth world championship title.

Mercedes have already been confirmed as constructors' holders for a record sixth successive year. That hardly came as a surprise, given the German team won the opening eight races of the season before Max Verstappen's triumph for Red Bull in Austria.

Now, the only matter that needs to be resolved is who will win the drivers' championship - and Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff is guaranteed to be celebrating no matter what.

That's because Hamilton and team-mate Valtteri Bottas are the only drivers still in contention to take the crown after Ferrari's Charles Leclerc lost ground at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Armed with a 64-point lead over the Finn, Hamilton is closing in on a third successive title and can mathematically wrap up the title at the next Grand Prix in Mexico, which would take him ever closer to equalling Michael Schumacher's record haul of seven titles.

Here's what he needs to get over the finish line...

What Hamilton needs to win the Championship

Hamilton can win his sixth world championship title at the Mexico Grand Prix on October 27.

The Briton won his first title in 2008 after his famous last-lap pass on Timo Glock in Brazil, denying Felipe Massa the chance to become world champion.

Since moving to Mercedes in 2013, Hamilton has dominated the hybrid era. Only Nico Rosberg denied him 2016 after a two-man slog for the title, but once the German retired, Hamilton continued his domination with back-to-back successes, leaving Sebastian Vettel in his rear-view mirror.

The Mercedes star has only won once in Mexico City in 2016, but will have fond memories of coming here having sealed his 2017 title in the region, celebrating with a series of doughnuts in front of the crowd.

With a maximum of 78 points available from the final three races - 25 points for a race victory and a bonus point for the fastest lap - Hamilton can win the title in Mexico if he beats team-mate Valtteri Bottas by 14 points in Mexico.

That means the Brit, if he wins and sets the fastest lap time, would then require Bottas to finish outside the podium places to clinch his sixth crown and fifth with Mercedes.

If Hamilton fails to win

If Bottas finishes in 10th or outside the points places, Hamilton would only require a podium finish to seal the title.

But Bottas, searching for his first world title in F1, will surely have been boosted by his victory in Suzuka - his first race win since Baku in April.

The odds are certainly against him, but in F1 anything is possible with technical failures and the weather often throwing spanners in the works. Indeed, Hamilton's form following the summer break has been somewhat inconsistent.

The neutrals will surely be hoping it goes right down to the wire like it did with Hamilton and Rosberg in 2016.

It would certainly make things interesting, but Bottas still needs a miracle from here.

He would need to win in Mexico and hope Hamilton finishes fourth or lower to keep his chances of winning the title alive.

The Brit would then need to DNF in the final two races - or finish outside the points - as well as Bottas taking the chequered flag in Brazil and Dubai to lose the title from here.
