What lessons have been learned from unrest in South Africa?

For more than a week, South Africa was beset by its worst violence since the end of apartheid.

While the protests and looting have mostly ended now, the nation is still trying to come to terms with what happened.

The violence killed at least 276 people and caused widespread destruction.

Hundreds of businesses were either looted or set on fire.

The unrest was sparked by the jailing of former president Jacob Zuma but expanded to include grievances about poverty and inequality.

Will the governing ANC review its policies to prevent such unrest in the future?

Presenter: Sami Zeidan

Guests:

Lindiwe Zulu – South Africa’s minister of social development

William Gumede – Executive chairperson of Democracy Works Foundation

Kwandiwe Kondlo – Professor of political economy in the Department of Politics and International Relations at the University of Johannesburg
