What Landon Collins’ mega deal will mean for Redskins depth chart, draft plans

Things just changed dramatically for the Washington Redskins.

A mere hours after the legal-tampering window before free agency opened, Dan Snyder and the Redskins made another big money deal by agreeing to terms with Landon Collins, formerly of the New York Giants, to an $84 million deal over six years.

When the transaction goes official Wednesday after the market opens, everything changes for the Redskins.

Collins can play all over the field, which is good new for a Redskins team in need of two starting safeties, if not some versatility in the form of a safety who can play a hybrid linebacker role.

Remember, the Redskins got rid of D.J. Swearinger last year after his repeated public comments about the team. The Redskins tried the whole trade for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix thing too, but he never got accustomed to his surroundings and is now a free agent.

The arrival of Collins likely means HHCD won’t be back in town. The Redskins also like what they have with budding players such as Deshazor Everett and Montae Nicholson, if not Troy Apke, too.

In other words, the Redskins won’t be looking to add more safeties in free agency. The draft is now a bit more open too, as the Redskins addressed one of their biggest problem areas with Collins, arguably the best safety on the free-agent market this year.
