What Jurgen Klopp told Liverpool players when they returned for pre-season

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp told his side they have unfinished business as they returned to Melwood to start pre-season training over the weekend.

The Reds were back at their training base for fitness testing on Saturday before undergoing a double session on the training pitches on Sunday.

But their pre-season schedule started with a meeting with Klopp - and defender Joe Gomez has detailed exactly what his message to players was.

The Reds ended their campaign by winning the Champions League against Tottenham but fell agonisingly short in their Premier League title quest.

Gomez admits Klopp urged his side to forget what happened last season and go on to achieve even more in 2019/20.

Gomez told Liverpool's official website : "Definitely. He (Klopp) said that (there's unfinished business) this morning in the meeting.

"We can be happy and proud of the achievement but we’ve got so much more work to do and so many ways to improve as well.

"The Premier League was so close and I think that’s all the motivation we need, that we were so close but so far at the same time in the fact that we didn’t get it.

"It’s something we want to get this year and to do so we can’t get complacent or dwell on what happened last season, we have to hit the ground running again now."

Liverpool are still waiting to welcome some of their star players back into training.

Those involved in international action over the summer will return at a later date, including Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Alisson.

But the Reds have still been put through their paces with their reduced numbers, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Rhian Brewster, Adam Lallana and Gomez amongst those back in full training after injury-hit campaigns.
