What Jurgen Klopp realised after first Liverpool trophy success

Jurgen Klopp has revealed the moment he realised winning trophies with Liverpool is different than doing it at any other club.

The Reds boss has managed his side to four major honours all coming within just over the space of a year.

And in reflecting on last season's triumphant Premier League winning campaign Klopp has picked out a 'strange situation' which allowed him to realise the scale of Liverpool's global following.

In a new LFCTV documentary called 'Golden Sky: Klopp's Champions 2019-20' - which will air at 8pm on Saturday evening - the German coach takes a look back at his side's most vital games.

Starting with the season opening win over Norwich, Klopp said: "Between winning the Champions League and the first game against Norwich City, it was obviously a summer break, which was nice.

"I realised winning something with Liverpool is completely different to winning something with any other club in the world because we flew pretty far.

"Part of our holiday was in Las Vegas, part of the holiday was in Tulum, Mexico, and wherever we arrived people were waiting and in LFC T-shirts.

"We arrived in Las Vegas at the hotel, a pretty big hotel, and obviously the guy responsible for the room service was obviously a massive LFC supporter! When we came in they had made a big cake with the Champions League trophy and my name on it!

"That's a strange situation. It's nice but on the other side it's like, 'I'm on holiday now; come on, ladies and gentlemen.'"

The boss also went on to explain how the signing of goalkeeper Adrian came about - with the Spaniard having been called into action against the Canaries following Alisson Becker's injury woe.

He added: "The goalkeeper situation, I don't know exactly, but one or two weeks before Simon [Mignolet] came and said, 'I can go home. I have an offer from Club Brugge', and we said, 'OK, but we don't have a solution.'

"John Achterberg came around the corner and said, 'OK, he's available, he's available and he's available.' We go through it and I remembered I'd seen some interviews with Adrian when he was at West Ham still and thought he's a smart guy. I didn't know exactly why he didn't play anymore because the West Ham goalie situation didn't look settled finally there. He is a good goalie, so why didn't he play?

"So we had to make sure how he is as a person. You try to find out but it was positive. John said, 'Yes, a good goalie and absolutely from all the options we have, he is the best.' Good, let's go for it.

"So he came in, trained for five or six days and is our first-choice goalkeeper! He did exceptionally well.

"We should not forget what an incredible job he did and we won obviously all of the games at the start of the season when he was in goal and he had a massive hand in that. He had some situations when he was really good."
