What Jurgen Klopp has ordered James Milner to stop doing for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has told James Milner to stop running so much during Liverpool matches.

Midfielder Milner is known for his incredible work rate for the Reds and famously clocked up a remarkable 13.53km during the Reds' Champions League victory over Manchester City two seasons ago.

The former England international was at his best again as the Merseyside club beat Southampton 2-1 this weekend, thanks to goals from Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino.

When asked about Milner's brilliant work ethic in the middle of the park after Liverpool's victory at St Mary's, Jurgen Klopp said: "That's James [Milner].

"Sometimes we speak about it and say don't run that much because it's better when you are in another position!

"But it's all good and very important to have players like this in your team."

Milner was started alongside Gini Wijnaldum and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on the south coast, before he was replaced by Fabinho.

And Klopp has explained why he decided to leave out Fabinho and Jordan Henderson after their UEFA Super Cup heroics against Chelsea .

"Fabinho and Henderson would have told me they were fine to play against Southampton but they ran 14km and 15km on Wednesday.

"I'm not a doctor but I've been in the business long enough to know there would be possibility for them to have problems during the game.

"Fabinho had a full body cramp after the game on Wednesday so we had to make a decision and it's great to have Milner to come in and good to be able to make these changes.

"No football player should play 50 or 60 games a season, especially not in these intense positions.

“Goalie and a centre-half maybe do it but all the rest: give whatever you have and next game maybe somebody else will do the job.

“That’s the plan, but we can only do that if they all stay fit.”
