What Josh Kroenke told Unai Emery and Arsenal stars immediately after Europa League final loss

Arsenal's Europa League final defeat at the hands of Chelsea three months ago was a dark day for the club.

Having failed to seal a top four finish in the Premier League last season, winning the European trophy was the final chance to get back into the Champions League after a two-year absence.

At half-time in Baku, Azerbaijan, the game hung in the balance as neither side could find a breakthrough.

But within 20 minutes of the restart the Blues were 3-0 up - ex-Gunners star Olivier Giroud opening the scoring - and went on to win 4-1 thus ensuring another year of Europa League football for the north London outfit.

Without stating the obvious, it's a night all connected to Arsenal will want to forget.

But club director Josh Kroenke took it upon himself in an attempt to lift the mood and revealed what he told head coach Unai Emery as well as a few Arsenal stars following the final whistle.

"It’s very tough to describe. You never want to put all of your eggs in one basket or have all of your feelings reside on one match - but when you reach a European final like we did, that’s exactly the feeling you have," Kroenke told the BBC.

"So when you finish the way that we did and come up short, it’s frustration; absolute frustration, disappointment.

"But I was positive that night as well. I remember coming off the pitch, I remember grabbing Unai, telling him that ‘We’ll be back’... and to a few of our players to ‘Remember the feeling’, to use that as motivation as they headed into their summer training.

"I’m always a guy that’s going to try to find positives out of certain situations and, once I got over the initial wave of disappointment, I knew that my job as a leader was to try to pull everybody back up.

"I think we’ve rebounded well out of that and we’re really excited about the new season."

The doom and gloom around Arsenal has been somewhat lifted following some rather impressive business in the summer transfer window which saw the club break their record to sign Nicolas Pepe for £72m.

Unai Emery: We never want to play against Liverpool

Furthermore, the Gunners have started the new Premier League season with two wins from two and face Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday evening.
