What Jose Mourinho told Willian Jose about January 2020 Tottenham transfer after Harry Kane blow

Willian Jose has confirmed that he held talks with Jose Mourinho over a move to Tottenham in January 2020.

Following the decision not to replace Fernando Llorente after his summer switch to Napoli, Spurs were left very short upfront after Harry Kane limped off with a hamstring injury in the New Year's Day defeat against Southampton.

Amid talk of a move for the Real Sociedad striker all month, in the end Mourinho didn't bring in a direct replacement for Kane as he added Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn to his ranks.

Jose, who had scored eight goals for the La Liga side prior to talk of a move to Tottenham, remained at the Anoeta Stadium and only hit another three goals as the San Sebastian-based club finished the season in sixth.

Now a Premier League player after linking up with Wolves last month, the 29-year-old has opened up on his failed transfer to Spurs and stated that Mourinho told him he wanted him at the club.

"A lot of things happened," he told Sky Sports in an exclusive interview. "I had an offer from them but Real Sociedad didn't want to let me go.

"I saw the opportunity to play in the Premier League for a big team with a lot of big players. I had spoken with Mourinho and he had told me he wanted me there.

"I felt there was a possibility I was leaving so I asked Real Sociedad to be left out of a game against Espanyol. But in the end it didn't happen and I stayed there for another year."

Yet to score for Nuno Espirito Santo's team since making the move to Molineux, the striker will be hoping to break his duck this weekend when they take on Leicester City.

Jose will have to wait a while to come up against Spurs for the first time, however, as the sides aren't due to meet in N17 until the start of May.
