What Jose Mourinho told Sky Sports colleagues about Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson

Graeme Souness revealed Jose Mourinho told his Sky Sports colleagues Dean Henderson believes he should have been introduced to Manchester United's team two years ago.

Henderson has been integrated into United's squad this season, playing back-up to David de Gea after two positive seasons on loan at Sheffield United.

Henderson's presence initially seemed to have a positive impact on De Gea's form, but the Spanish goalkeeper made two mistakes against Everton, which has placed renewed scrutiny on his position as the No.1 at Old Trafford.

Souness says he is a fan of Henderson and believes he could solve a problem position for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

He said on Sky Sports: "I think he’s a big personality, I think he’s full of himself, which I love.

"Jose Mourinho works with us and told us that he feels he should’ve been in the team a couple of years ago. I love that about a player, if they’re full of themselves - then, great - as long as they can back it up.

"You mentioned Alisson, if you go back three years ago, Liverpool were a nearly team, they signed players, Alisson and Van Dijk, now they’re conceding daft goals. They were a nearly team and then with two players, they became the real deal.

"He must have a good goalkeeper, because it doesn’t matter how much of the ball you have or if you’re dominating games, a goalkeeper will always have to make one or two saves in a game."

Souness also argued that De Gea's mistakes mean that some outfield players may be questioning whether the Spaniard should be the first-choice goalkeeper or not.

He said: "I’m a fan of Henderson, I think it’s only a matter of time. If you look at Sheffield United's plight, I think he’s the single biggest reason they are where they are.

"If you look at Man United, De Gea is making mistakes, and as a manager, you can only tolerate that for so long because if he’s making mistakes then that impacts on the whole team.

"You can bet there’s rumblings about De Gea from outfield players, guaranteed."
