What Jose Mourinho's Chelsea and Man United transfer business could mean for Spurs in January

The January transfer window will soon be open for business and all eyes will be on Tottenham to see what they do in the market.

Having brought in four new players in the summer having gone without the previous year, supporters are hoping that there will be an addition or two before the window slams shut after such a disappointing start to the season.

Trailing the top four by a whopping 12 points prior to Jose Mourinho's arrival in November, the Lilywhites have managed to whittle the lead down but they are now five points behind Chelsea following Saturday's 2-2 draw at Norwich City.

January was always a very quiet month with Mauricio Pochettino at the helm as Dele Alli and Lucas Moura were the Argentine's only two notable recruits in five winter windows.

Not many managers like to deal at the turn of the year given the lack of available players and the fact that clubs demand a lot more money to part with their players, but what could January be like with Mourinho in charge?

Well, apart from one season during his second spell at Chelsea, Mourinho has tended to do very little business in January during his time in the Premier League.

Appointed at Stamford Bridge for the first time in 2004, he added to his squad in his debut season with the signing of Jiri Jarosik from CSKA Moscow for £3million.

Portuguese midfielder Maniche then followed in a loan deal 12 months later, before he didn't sign a single player in January 2007.

Returning to west London in 2013 after spells in charge of Inter Milan and Real Madrid, Mourinho's transfer approach in January changed completely as five players came in through the door.

Nemanja Matic's arrival was an important signing as he helped strengthen the midfield, with Mohamed Salah also joining after making a big impression with Swiss side Basel.

He also bought for the future with youngsters Kurt Zouma, Bertrand Traore and Mario Pasalic the next to join the Blues.

Juan Cuadrado, who really impressed at the 2014 World Cup, came in the following season but that was one transfer that didn't go to plan at all as he was soon on his way to Juventus on loan a matter of months later.

Mourinho's next job in England was as Manchester United boss and his two winter transfer windows at Old Trafford saw him bring in just the one player.

The man in question was Alexis Sanchez.

Seen as a great signing at the time given how well he had done at Arsenal, the less said about his move to Manchester the better.

January's certainly not the ideal month to bring in players and Mourinho's past record suggests that it could be a very quiet month at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

In fact, he has made it quite clear a few times since his appointment that that will very much be the case.

Speaking ahead of the Brighton & Hove Albion Boxing Day Clash, the 56-year-old stated the club wouldn't be the "kings of the market" once the window reopens again.

"I know that in our transfer market we are going just to react to things that can happen to us in the market," he told reporters. "Like I was saying if some player leaves we need to adapt to it.

"But we are never going to be the kings of the market, attacking important targets, fighting with clubs that are ready by their profile and philosophy to splash the cash and to go to the important targets.

"We need to do our things in an intelligent way, a creative way, and I repeat I like the players that I have.

"The more I work with them, the more I know them, the more I realise their qualities and their problems.

"I keep saying that I need time and this time is arriving. Not from Sunday until the 26th, or the 26th until the 28th.

"But in January, in February, we are going to have a little bit more time to try to improve it."

With more outgoings expected to happen than incomings through the door, Spurs fans may well have to wait until the summer for Mourinho to really stamp his mark on the team in the transfer market.
