What Jose Mourinho has said about Spurs target Bruno Fernandes ahead of January transfer window

The January transfer window opens in just over a month's time and Spurs have a new head coach at the helm.

And it is a head coach who has nearly always had money to spend in his previous jobs.

Jose Mourinho arrived as Tottenham's head coach on Wednesday morning, taking over after Mauricio Pochettino was sacked by Daniel Levy for a poor start to the season.

Spurs signed four players in the summer, after two transfer windows without any signings at all, and there is a feeling that the squad requires further strengthening in January to get back into top four reckoning.

Mourinho arrives at Spurs with the club in 14th place in the table, with just three wins from their opening 12 games.

And he will be hoping to have funds available to strengthen the squad when the window opens.

However, he has been named head coach, rather than manager, so the final say on transfers will stop with chairman Levy.

One player who is sure to be linked with a move to N17 is Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes, who was touted as a potential summer signing for Spurs, or Manchester United.

He was seen as a Christian Eriksen replacement, with the Dane set to leave on a free transfer in the summer following the end of his contract at the club.

And Fernandes could still be a target under Mourinho, given the Portuguese link and Mourinho's impression of the player.

Speaking to Eleven Sports in the summer, Mourinho said: "I was surprised by the season of Bruno Fernandes.

"It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player.

"It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all. He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He finds space in the penalty area. It’s all there."
