What Jose Mourinho has said about Harry Winks amid £40m Man City transfer links

With the transfer window now in full flow, concentration will no doubt be on the incomings at Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg’s arrival this week was Spurs’ first signing of the current transfer window, but Jose Mourinho will be looking to add more new faces in the coming weeks.

However, there could also be players leaving the club ahead of the new season, with midfielder Harry Winks the latest to be linked with the exit door at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A report in the Sun claims that Man City are lining up a move for the 24-year-old, with a suggestion that the midfielder will be moved on should a bid in excess of £40 million come in.

The arrival of Hojbjerg has provided more competition in the centre of midfield at Spurs and the report claims that may make Tottenham more willing to accept a bid should it come, as well as providing funds for more signings this summer.

Winks has been a regular starter for Tottenham under Mourinho, playing the full 90 minutes of the last six league games of the season, and if the Portuguese’s past comments on the player are to go by, then he may be reluctant to let him leave.

“Winks is improving a lot, a lot. He thinks much more forward than before,” he said in a pre-match press conference back in February.

"Even in the area of his movement, he was a lot more positional than he is now. Now you can see him on the left and the right trying to do that.

"So it is trying to compensate problems that we have with a different perspective.”

Winks himself revealed that a chat with Mourinho helped him to recapture his best form.

“I had an honest chat with the manager and he told me what he believed I needed to do," he said back in March.

“It was just an honest conversation, which I respect massively. It started with training.

“I just think my whole level and just the intensity as well, which I said to the manager that I agree. Since we had that conversation things have improved and I have been playing more and it is important that I keep those levels and intensity because I want to stay in the team.”
