What Jose Mourinho expects from 'difficult' Newcastle as he talks 'incredible' Karl Darlow

Jose Mourinho is expecting a 'difficult' match against Newcastle United on Sunday and the Spurs' boss believes getting a point from the game could be 'very important' for the Magpies.

Steve Bruce's side are two points clear of the relegation zone in 17th place following a run of just two wins since December 16.

Newcastle have a game in hand on 18th-placed Fulham, but the Cottagers are full of belief and have been picking up more points in recent weeks.

The black-and-whites will be looking to respond following a humiliating 3-0 defeat at Brighton last time out and Mourinho, who only won his first league fixture at St James' Park last season, does not expect it to be an easy game.

"I expect a team, obviously, trying to win the match or at least trying to get a point because in this moment, for every team, a point sometimes can be very important," he told reporters on Zoom.

Why Newcastle United supporters want Steve Bruce sacked

"I think they are a difficult team to play against so, of course, I expect a difficult match for us."

Newcastle actually claimed a fortuitous point in the reverse fixture in London back in September after the visitors were awarded a controversial penalty at the death after Andy Carroll headed a cross against Eric Dier's arm from close range.

Spurs had 66% possession, 12 shots on target and 10 corners that afternoon and Mourinho will never forget Karl Darlow's performance.

"It was a game where we had a reason to feel very frustrated because we played very well," he added.

"The Newcastle goalkeeper was deservedly the man of the match because he made incredible saves.

"It was the kind of match where easily it should be three or four nil because we played really well in this match.

"In the end, we lost two points in the last minute with a very controversial situation but if you look to the season, it happened in many stadiums. Situations that we could consider too controversial. That's the way it is now."
