What Jorginho did against Leeds to finally earn the respect of every Chelsea supporter

Weeks after finishing third in this year's Ballon d'Or, Jorginho is doing his thing yet again and making Chelsea supporters appreciate his qualities.

To step up in stoppage time with the game against Leeds United at 2-2 took a lot of confidence and courage, but to do it carrying an injury and already having slotted home a penalty in the match took a lot of nerve.

The tension was ramped up and so was the pressure inside his own head. Jorginho missed a key penalty only a few weeks ago for Italy as they failed to directly qualify for the World Cup.

Where would the goalkeeper expect him to go? It would be very easy at that point for a player to second guess themselves and change their mind last minute.

It's safe to say Jorginho has split the Chelsea fanbase over the last few seasons. However, the way he has conducted himself and kept fighting is a testament to the man and player.

Jorginho scored his ninth and tenth goals for Chelsea this calendar year against Leeds, which sees him sitting in second place behind the other goalscorer of the match Mason Mount on 14.

The three goals netted today also saw the Blues move beyond the 100-goal mark for the year: Jorginho scored the 100th and 101st goals of 2021.

Tuchel sang the Italian's praises in the post-match press conference by saying: "He is super important. Jorgi has sacrificed himself for many weeks, actually.

"I knew there would be a point in the season he feels his body and wouldn't be fully fit. But Jorgi is Jorgi and he is fully aware of the situation that we miss Kova and N'Golo"

"He sacrificed and gives his best every single day. He spends hours and hours with the physios and medical department to get himself in the best shape possible. It's very nice to have this kind of attitude.

"It was a big reward for him today as it is not easy to score two penalties in one game."

Chelsea are set to get a much-needed squad boost by the return of N'Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Trevoh Chalobah in the coming days, which will be a welcome sight as the festive fixtures begin to pile up.

This could potentially mean Tuchel is given a chance to rest Jorginho and let his injury heal before he is pushed too hard and it becomes a serious issue.

I will own up and say I've had my doubts about Jorginho in the past, but with performances such as against Leeds when playing through the pain barrier, he deserves to get all the credit.

I'm happy to be proven wrong when it means the team is on the good side of a much-needed victory.

The Blues have a few days now to rest and recover with the next fixture coming on Thursday night under the lights of Stamford Bridge as Chelsea host Everton. With title rivals Man City and Liverpool both winning yesterday it means Chelsea still sit third in the league.
