John Terry hailed Chelsea's supporters as "unbelievable" following their protests outside Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.
Ahead of the Blues ' Premier League clash with Brighton - which ended goalless - the hosts' fans gathered outside the stadium in west London to protest against Roman Abramovich 's decision to take part in the highly controversial European Super League.
The efforts from the Chelsea fans seemed to work, with the club announcing their withdrawal late on Tuesday night - becoming the last Premier League club to do so.
However, football.london understands that the Blues were actually the first club to offer their resignation from the Super League.
Ex-Blues captain Terry, posting on his Instagram story on Tuesday, hailed the club's supporters for their efforts in preventing Chelsea moving into a 'breakaway' league.
He said on his story: "Unbelievable from the supporters tonight (blue love heart emoji)" - with an image of the Chelsea crest being ripped into two pieces.
The proposed Super League plans were met with widespread condemnation from supporters, key figures and plenty more within the game of football.
The uproar was so much, that the six Premier League clubs that initially signed the letter of intent to take part in the competition, all withdrew from proceedings in the space of a few hours.
Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, Manchester City and Manchester United all followed Chelsea's suit in terms of pulling out of the competition.
The Blues released a statement that read: "As reported earlier this evening (Tuesday), Chelsea Football Club can confirm that it has begun the formal procedures for withdrawal from the group developing plans for a European Super League.
"Having joined the group late last week, we have now had time to consider the matter fully and have decided that our continued participation in these plans would not be in the best interests of the Club, our supporters or the wider football community."
