What John Eustace said about his chances of replacing Steve McClaren as QPR manager

The end of Queens Park Rangers' season also spells the end of John Eustace's time in charge of the first team.

At least for now.

The former no. 2 stepped up to replace Steve McClaren when he was sacked on April 1, leaving him to take charge of QPR's final seven games of the season.

Eustace picked up seven points in difficult circumstances, leading many to tip him as an outside bet to get the vacant managers role at Loftus Road.

Speaking to the press after the victory over Sheffield Wednesday, Eustace was said it had been a really positive experience.

Luke Freeman's future, the season verdict and a glimpse into the future - QPR talking points

He said: "I’ve had a really enjoyable year.

"Obviously I came in and I was working with Steve who I have a lot of respect for and he’s a very good manager. I enjoyed that side of it and I’ve also enjoyed the last four or five weeks of managing the group.

"The attitude of the boys has been fantastic and they’re a good set of lads. When I came in we were on our way down with seven or eight games to go but you could see the togetherness and the performances, especially for me, have been different class."

John Eustace gives his verdict on QPR's missed penalty - and reveals who should have taken it

Asked whether he feels he's done enough to enter the running to replace Steve McClaren, Eustace said: “I don’t know, that’s not up to me to say.

"All I was asked to do was help to keep the team in the league and develop the younger players and we’ve done that.

“I’ve managed before so I know what it takes.

John Eustace on Luke Freeman's QPR future with Middlesbrough and Leeds tipped for summer move

"It’s a fantastic job for whoever takes the role but all I was asked to do was keep the team in the league and develop the young players and that’s what I’ve done. The rest is up to the club and what they want to do with me.”

Regardless of whether John Eustace gets the managers job, he says that he'd love to stay at Loftus Road in some capacity next term.

"it’s a great club," he said.

"The group are very honest and I’ve enjoyed my time so yeah we’ll wait and see.”
