What James Rodriguez didn't do, West Brom player gets lost and other moments missed in Everton win

Dictating the tempo

James Rodriguez did everything at Goodison - except sprint.

But he didn't need to, the game was played at his pace.

The Colombian scored, he assisted, he dribbled, crossed and found pockets of space all over the pitch in a man-of-the-match performance, and did it all without the need to move into top gear.

Rodriguez, in not recording a single sprint, showed that while Everton have added much needed energy into their squad, they have also injected a serious amount of football intelligence.

Where's your head at?

As the red-mist descended, West Brom's Kieran Gibbs lost his head. He also lost his sense of direction.

The full-back reacted to Rodriguez's shoulder barge by striking the Everton attacker in the face and received his marching orders for doing so.

But so enraged was Gibbs that he forgot his surroundings and instead of walking towards the away changing rooms, situated in the Park End car park to ensure Goodison meets Covid-regulations, he headed straight down the tunnel!

Newly promoted, same old story

Carlo Ancelotti has the best record of any manager in the top flight when it comes to facing newly promoted sides.

The Everton boss went into yesterday's meeting with West Brom having not lost in 15 previous encounters with teams that had come up from the Championship.

Saturday's 5-2 win extended that run to 16 (W12 D4). So which of the new-boys are up next? A trip to Fulham is scheduled for November 21. History says Everton are, at least, nailed on to take a point from that game.

Golden touch

“The manager is on me every day about one-touch finishes and being in the box - being in the right areas to put the ball in the back of the net," Dominic Calvert-Lewin said, after bagging the first hat-trick of his career.

That's four goals in two league games for Everton's No9 (it took him until December's visit of Chelsea to reach four league goals last season, by the way) but he's done it having only had 48 touches of the ball.

Last season, he averaged 28 touches per league game (a number brought down by the fact he came off the bench six times), but he has started this term with a lower average.
