What Jamal Adams means for the Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks have never been ones to shy away from making the splashiest moves in the NFL, and on Saturday afternoon they just took another major plunge by acquiring discontented safety Jamal Adams from the New York Jets in a blockbuster trade.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets remained adamant they would not trade the cornerstone to their defense unless they received a significant proposal. While the cost was steep, it’s hard to imagine any Seahawk fans will be losing sleep over it when they consider what they are getting in return.

Getting Jamal Adams into the Seahawks defense means for the first time since 2017, Seattle’s secondary will once again boast perhaps the best safety tandem in the NFL. A combo of Quandre Diggs and Jamal Adams will be suffocating for any opposing offense.

Good thing, too, considering the state of the rest of the NFC West. The Rams still have an offense which routinely creates problems for the Seahawks, the Cardinals added receiver DeAndre Hopkins, and the 49ers are still led by offensive guru Kyle Shanahan.

Seattle’s secondary has been one of the weakest in the league for the past couple of seasons and has been routinely exposed. Adding Adams will go a long way to shore up any holes, and will get the unit back to a competitive state.

Not for nothing, Adams might actually help out Seattle’s pass rush as well. With 11 career sacks, Adams has the most of any defensive back since joining the league in 2017.

Perhaps just as importantly as reloading their defense, by getting Adams to Seattle, the Seahawks ensured he wouldn’t be going anywhere else. It was reported earlier in July both the Seahawks and 49ers were in discussions to get Adams. There was also a report from Adam Schefter that Adams would be welcome to joining other NFC rivals like the Cowboys and Eagles in a trade.

Seattle had to pay more than a pretty penny to get Jamal Adams to the Pacific Northwest, but in doing so they vastly improved their defense, prevented rivals from getting better, and with Adams at only age 24, likely locked up their long term option at a crucial position.
