What Jake Silverstein will likely report back to US owners as behind-the-scenes Swansea City picture becomes clear

Jake Silverstein has been in the thick of the action for several weeks after travelling to Swansea earlier this month.

The American - who is on the club's board of directors - has been overseeing all day-to-day operations at the club in a bid to strengthen the links between those on the ground in Swansea and the majority owners on the other side of the Atlantic.

And while Russell Martin's side have played just once since Silverstein arrived in Swansea for only the second time, the businessman will have benefitted greatly from being at the epicentre of the club.

The 4-1 loss to Nottingham Forest further exposed some of the transfer work that is required, with head coach Martin eager to bolster his squad in January.

Player exits are also required to ensure Swansea can remain stable financially - with Jay Fulton and Yan Dhanda among those who could depart next month while others such as Morgan Whittaker should leave on loan.

From a playing perspective, the key nugget Silverstein will have noticed is Martin's ruthlessness.

The head coach has held regular talks with members of his squad on an individual basis since being named as Steve Cooper's successor on August 1.

Those who either did not fit the style or who did not perhaps fully buy into the manager's methods were still given the chance to prove their worth under the current regime - although, sooner or later, decisions have to be made.

As a result, it means the Swans are, over time, likely to mould their squad into what suits Martin's ideals which serves as further proof that patience is required in what should be seen as a long-term project as opposed to a quick fix.

Covid-19 restrictions have made it difficult for club staff and players to fully sample the mood around the city in recent months - although, even with some tough moments, fans have been immensely supportive of the current coaching staff.

That will no doubt serve as a boost to Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan who handed Martin a three-year contract in the summer.

The club certainly appears to be unified at present, and as early as the opening game of the campaign against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park, it became obvious that those on the pitch have fully bought into Martin's vision.

But work is needed.

Mark Allen is spearheading Swansea's transfer business following the exit of head of recruitment Andy Scott.

As a result of Scott's departure, the club are still bidding to fill two key positions. The first is a chief scout and the second will be a head of player acquisition. Those two will both be tasked with reporting to sporting director Allen.

The club identified targets several months ago, although plans have continuously been tweaked in accordance with the ever-changing landscape of the winter market.

As for the playing style, things have dramatically changed since the summer.

The key now must be for Swansea to find the right balance to ensure they can play attractive attacking football on a regular basis as opposed to being possession-based with little penetration, as has been the case at times during the transitional period under Martin to date.

The lack of anything even remotely close to a sufficient pre-season means Martin simply has to be given time to prove his worth. By being in the corridors of the Swansea.com Stadium and those of the club's Fairwood training ground, Silverstein will have noticed the strong bond between Martin, assistant boss Luke Williams, technical development coach Matt Gill and goalkeeper coach Dean Thornton. They are a backroom team who fully believe in their methods.

It has long been accepted that there will be setbacks to go with the good days seen against the likes of Cardiff City, Peterborough United and Coventry City.

Although, with almost half of the 2021/22 season gone, the top brass at Swansea are keen to see further improvements in the New Year as the club continues to adjust to what has been a monumental period of change.

The club's January business will go a long way to assisting Swansea in their quest to rise up the Championship table in the coming months.

Silverstein now has a much clearer idea of what the coaching staff want, and the owners are keen to back boss Martin however they can to ensure success can be achieved.
