What it's like to play for Pep Guardiola: 'He does not attach much importance to human relationships'

Former Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia has revealed what it is like to play under Pep Guardiola, saying that Manchester City coach “does not attach much importance to human relationships”.

Morocco international Benatia, who now plays for Qatari side Al-Duhail, spent two seasons playing for Guardiola at Bayern Munich.

And the defender has revealed that Guardiola does not care about being friends with his players.

“It’s my opinion that many share: Guardiola is someone who does not attach much importance to human relationships,’ Benatia told Radio Monte Carlo [via Daily Mail].

“He says it is because he has been disappointed in the past.

“He said to me: “I bought you, I wanted you. You have this quality and the other quality. I need this, I will teach you this and that, you are here to do what I say, but we are not here to be friends.”’

However, Benatia nevertheless acknowledges that Guardiola is one of the best coaches in the business.

“He is perhaps the best tactician in the world,” he added.

“I was 28 years old when I joined Bayern, and I think with a lot of football knowledge. And yet you get the impression every day of discovering a new facet of football with him.”
