What it's like to live in the part of Nottingham with most coronavirus cases

Residents in the area of Nottingham with the most coronavirus cases say they are worried about the growing number of infections.

The Lenton Abbey, University Park area of the city is the first to record more than 100 positive cases since the pandemic began.

New figures, which run up until September 27, indicate there have been a sharp increase in cases, with 102 people now testing positive.

It comes as university students return for the start of the academic year.

Claire Taylor, a student who lives in the area, said: "I think students are getting a bad rap, a lot of us are sticking to the rules.

"I think there was always going to be a rise in cases in areas like this where there are a lot of students - it's inevitable.

"There is more testing, too, which is a factor. So it's not surprising to hear there have been more cases."

Nuno Silva has lived in the area for more than 15 years and is taking a lot of precautions to make sure he stays safe.

"I've been in my own bubble for about six months now," he said.

"I go out shopping every three weeks or so, but other than that I don't really see a lot of people.

"It comes as no surprise that there has been more infections here though, it's a student area. I'm taking the precautions because I want to drive and see my mum in Portugal.

"It's important to me so I'm being careful. I'm worried - I think people are right to be worried if there are that many cases in quite a small area."

Another resident, who has lived on Anslow Avenue for one year and wished to remain anonymous, agreed, saying: "It's worrying.

"I wasn't sure on the exact number of cases, but I thought it would be high. It's definitely concerning living in an area which has the most.

"I think it's because of the students returning to the campus. There are lots of students here.

"I just try to keep my distance from everyone when I am out as much as possible."

There are 18 areas in Nottingham with more than 50 cases, a jump from 11 the week before.

Lenton Abbey and University Park have seen the most cases so far, followed by Radford with 84 and The Park and Castle with 71.

There were 221 positive cases in the week between September 21 and September 27, the highest recorded number in a week since March and the start of the pandemic.
