What it's like at the newly re-opened Grimsbury farm

For five months during lockdown all of the city's farms remained closed to families.

And while St Werburgh's is still shut, Windmill Hill and Grimsbury Farms have now reopened.

There is nothing more my son loves than a chance to see some animals, and play in a good park to blow off some steam.

That's why one of his favourite trips out has always been to Grimsbury Farm. This community-run attraction is close to Kingswood, where you can see South Gloucestershire's rolling hills in the distance.

One of the biggest differences is that kids can no longer feed the animals. The buckets filled with treats to tempt sheep and goats over to the fences had to be scrapped to cut the risk of spreading the virus.

While my son was slightly disappointed by this news, he soon forgot and quickly made his way to the duck pond. Here he watched the creatures waddle to the gate to see if we had any food for them.

From there it was off to see the sheep, who you can also spot from the venue's extensive park.

A real highlight here is the rocking horse, which my son spends what feels like a lifetime on.

The slides and climbing frames were open as usual, and the area was packed with families - who were equally as happy to have the venue open again.

We visited on a Monday which probably isn't advisable, because they close most of the farm off for a deep clean.

All visitors are also made to sign in upon arrival, leaving their names and telephone numbers for the track and trace system.

We finished our visit with a stop at the cafe which had a new one-way system in place, and only outdoor seating. My son feasted on an ice cream (only £1.10) before using one of the many hand sanitiser stations on our exit.

It was so nice to see the farm re-opened, it's such an amazing free attraction to have on our doorstep and it seemed all the volunteers were working really hard to make sure it could remain open.
