What is wrong with Jean in EastEnders, and does she die after horror collapse?

EastEnders airs worrying scenes in upcoming episodes, as Jean Slater collapses in the Square - with it unclear at the time what is wrong with her.

Recently the character has sparked concern, acting out and fearing for Whitney Dean - while calling her by the name of her daughter Stacey Fowler.

Her loved ones and friends have been worried for her, with her soon admitting to Kush Kazemi that she wasn't taking her bipolar medication.

There's more turmoil ahead though, when the character suddenly becomes unwell.

In scenes that will air across this week and next, things take a dangerous turn when Jean suffers a seizure.

What is wrong with Jean, and what happens to her?

Jean has had a tough time recently, following the death of her love interest Daniel.

He and Jean were battling cancer at the same time, but while she got the all clear he sadly learned his illness was terminal.

Daniel passed away in February, leaving Jean distraught - already feeling alone after her daughter Stacey fled Walford last summer, after she hit Phil Mitchell over the head with a wrench and left him for dead.

She's been on the run, and while she's now pretty much fine to return it was recently said in an episode that the pair had had a falling out.

Jean recently stopped taking her bipolar medication, saying she felt "alive" but those closest to her noticed a change in her behaviour.

Fearing she might grow out of control, Kush began hiding her medication in her food and drinks to make sure she was taking it.

He and Shirley Carter soon give her extra tablets, fearing the medication isn't working after another outburst.

In the next few episodes Jean continues to feel extremely unwell, but doesn't tell anyone.

Suddenly, she collapses in the Square and suffers a seizure - leading to an ambulance being called.

Viewers will have to tune in next week to find out why Jean collapses and whether she will be okay.

Does Jean die?

EastEnders: Kush Kazemi tried to help Jean (BBC)

Jean's fate has not been revealed, while it's thought she will survive.

The character and actress haven't left the BBC soap as far as we are aware, while the situation she is in is a dangerous one.

Whether Kush and Shirley have given Jean too high a dose, or if something else is to blame remains to be revealed.

Who plays Jean?

(BBC)

Jean is played by actress Gillian Wright.

Gillian has played the role of Stacey's mum since 2004.

What's next for the character?

For now, EastEnders are keeping pretty quiet over the fallout of the collapse and what happens next.

Hopefully Jean will make a full recovery, and Kush and Shirley won't face trouble if it did turn out their actions were the cause.

EastEnders airs Mondays at 8pm, and Tuesdays at 7:30pm on BBC One.
