What is Unbelievable on Netflix? Hard hitting true crime drama set to have viewers gripped

Netflix have had a stellar year when it comes to buzzed about series, documentary and films.

It started with Sandra Bullock movie Birdbox and dark stalker thriller You and then came the likes of Abducted in Plain Sight, The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann and Dirty John.

And just as details are teased about , Netflix are releasing another true-crime drama on viewers.

Unbelievable is released on Friday, September 13 and if you don't want to know everything about what will unfold, there are a few spoilers in here.

What is Unbelievable?

Unbelievable, which has eight episodes, is based on real-life events and centres on Marie, an 18-year-old woman who in 2008 told police she'd been tied up by her shoelaces and raped by a masked man at knifepoint.

However, male detectives working on the case cast doubts about her version of events and so did her foster mothers.

This left Marie herself thinking that the whole thing had been some vivid dream, leading to her retracting her statement.

Her actions led to her being charged with false reporting and accepting a plea deal.

But after the case concluded, a number of similar incidents were reported, leading to two female detectives to launch an investigation to find Marie and then track down the serial rapist.

Who is in the cast?

The cast is led by Kaitlyn Dever in the role of Marie. You might be familiar with Kaitlyn from Booksmart, a film released earlier this year.

Her foster mothers are played by Elizabeth Marvel, of House of Cards fame, and Bridget Everett, a comedian who has appeared on tour with Amy Schumer and on programmes like The Tonight Show.

The two Colorado detective - Karen DuVall and Grace Rasmussen - are played by Muriel's Wedding and Wanderlust actress Toni Colette and Merrit Wever, who you might recognise from Nurse Jackie.
