What is TikTok? Irish people urged to join popular app during coronavirus isolation

TikTok is the app success story of 2020 so far and is getting even more popular during these times of isolation.

And plenty of important Irish people are urging others, especially the elderly, to get into the dance app to keep people occupied during the social-distancing period.

But many people have never heard of the app and don't know what it's about - so here's a quick guide.

What is Tiktok?

TikTok is a Chinese video-sharing social networking service owned by ByteDance, a Beijing-based company founded in 2012 by Zhang Yiming.

It is used to create short dance, lip-sync, comedy, and talent videos. The app was launched in 2017 for iOS and Android in markets outside of China.

It has only really grown in prominence in Ireland, Europe and the US in the last six months.

How popular is it?

It's extremely popular, especially with people aged under 20.

It has 500 million active users worldwide, has been downloaded over 1.5 billion times on the Apple App Store and Google Play.

As of January it was being used by more than 90,000 Irish users a day, with that figure likely much higher at this stage.

What do you see on it?

That varies, the app features from millions of users across the world and it varies a lot.

Most of the content is people trying a number of dances to the songs that are popular at the moment - you will see and hear the same dances and music over and over again.

Pranks, silly videos and TV show clips all feature heavily.

How do I join?

That's the easy part, all you have to do is go to the Google Play store or Apple's app store, search for TikTok and download it to your phone.

Then just enjoy hours of silly videos.
