What is the worst day to have your birthday?

“I’m having a birthday party! Hope you can make it. I’ve bulk-ordered the prosecco, sorted out 200 mini chicken kievs and the playlist is pure Missy Elliot. I’d love to see you there. Ah, the date? It’s on 30 December, New Year’s Eve eve. You might be staying in? Yeah, thought so.”

I’ve always thought my birthday was pretty unlucky. Apart from the fact that no one wants to go out the day before the Biggest Night of the Year (even though it’s consistently the Biggest Letdown of the Year), there are the joint presents, the rubbish weather and the post-Christmas slump to contend with. My friend Olivia was born on Christmas Day, which many assume must be awful, but her mum has always overcompensated for the unfortunate timing and made sure her birthday is properly celebrated.

New research has found that 16 December is officially the worst day of the year to have a birthday. It also found that 27% of December-born folk receive their birthday gifts wrapped in Christmas paper. Ouch. But do you agree? What is the worst day to be born? If your birthday is worse than 16 December, or mine, we want to hear about it. Answers below the line.
