What is the Run 5 Donate 5 Nominate 5 Instagram challenge and how can you take part?

The Run 5 Donate 5 Nominate 5 challenge has swept across Instagram in recent weeks as people encourage physical activity and support the battle with Covid-19.

The trend started in the UK last month with people running 5km, posting their recorded times and donating £5 to the NHS.

The social media challenge has spread to Ireland around the world, with people nominating various charities and causes.

Participants post pictures to their Instagram story, showing that they’ve run the 5km and donated money, before tagging a further five friends.

Instagram's Run 5 Donate 5 challenge was set up by Olivia Strong, who started the Run For Heroes Instagram account.

Strong told Pure Radio: “I was out running and I saw how many people were also out running.

”I thought, surely there’s something in this? Surely we can put this to a cause.

"I thought if people can afford to give £5, it’s not too much of an ask, and people will feel like they’re doing something, and if they nominate five people then it will spread, almost like a virus."

People have been encouraged to respect social distancing guidelines while partaking in the challenge and to stay within a 2km boundary in line with government advice.
