What is the 'Floss Dance'? All you need to know as Irish priest reignites craze at Holy Communion in Cork

Just over 12 months ago the 'Floss Dance' took the internet by storm.

The dance had everyone from Premier League footballer Dele Alii to British politician Jeremy Corbyn giving it go.

And although it may look relatively easy, it takes some practicing to get used to.

The craze peaked in April of 2018, with people from all ages uploading their versions of the dance on social media.

While the fad has died down a little bit, an Irish priest has got everyone talking about the 'Floss Dance' again after doing it on the altar at a Holy Communion ceremony in Cork last week.

The move involves a person swinging their arms left and right around their body.

It gets its name due to the movement, which involves your arms swinging an invisible piece of dental floss around your body.

How to do the Floss Dance

  • Stand with your knees slightly bent
  • Keep your legs about two feet apart
  • Begin swinging your arms left and right around your body
  • Make sure your arms are going in the same direction and at the same speed
  • Begin to move your hips, keeping your hands moving the other way
  • When one arm is behind your back, your hip should be leaning in the opposite direction
  • Keep repeating the motion and find a rhythm and speed you're comfortable with

Where did it originate?

Videos of the dance move have been online for nearly a decade, but the craze gathered legs in May 2017.

Katy Perry invited a 15-year-old boy to perform the dance on the chat show Saturday Night Live after she spotted him online.

The teenager Russell Horning, now widely known as The Backpack Kid, became an overnight sensation after dancing live to Perry's new song 'Swish Swish'.

The 17-year-old now has over 2.2million followers on Instagram.

Fortnite

The dance became even more of a hit online, especially with children and teenagers, after it appeared in the video fame Fortnite: Battle Royale.

It was introduced as one of a variety of dance moves players must perform to progress.

And after months in the shadows, a viral video of a priest flossing at his local church in Passage West, Co Cork has brought the dance move back into the limelight.

The priest had just ended a Holy Communion mass with a bunch of excited school kids and finished it off by surprising everyone with his dance moves.

One of the guests at the Communion recorded the footage and told the Irish Mirror that Fr. Con is "loved in Passage by all young and old for being so outgoing".
