What is the difference between a tornado watch and warning?

  • The National Weather Service has warned that a storm system is barreling toward the East Coast with dangerously high winds and potential for "producing strong and long track tornadoes."
  • Understanding the distinct levels of tornado alerts issued by the National Weather Service is crucial for public safety, as these warnings escalate from potential threat to imminent danger. There are three key classifications: a Tornado Watch, a Tornado Warning, and the most severe, a Tornado Emergency.
  • A Tornado Watch signifies that conditions are favourable for tornadoes to develop in and around the designated area. This is the time for preparation, not panic. Residents are advised to review and discuss their emergency plans, take stock of essential supplies, and identify their designated safe room.
  • A Tornado Warning signifies that a tornado has been sighted or detected by radar, posing imminent danger to life and property, necessitating immediate action to seek shelter in a sturdy building's interior.
  • A Tornado Emergency is the highest alert level, issued when a violent tornado has touched down, confirming catastrophic damage and requiring immediate refuge in the safest possible location. During a Tornado Emergency, individuals should not attempt to outrun the tornado in a vehicle but should shelter in place and inform friends and family within the affected area.
