In the wake of the Panama Papers scandal that forced the Icelandic prime minister Sigmundur David Gunnlaugsson to step down in April, Iceland are expected to hold a parliamentary election on Saturday 29 October. It will be the country’s second election this year, as political newcomer Gudni Johannesson won the presidential election in June after riding a wave of anti-establishment sentiment.
Iceland has rarely seen the level of political outrage that saw people take to the streets in April after the Panama Paper revelations. Opinion is divided about which political party has a higher chance of winning this time. Recent opinion polls showed that conservative voters are sticking with the Independence party, who are the ruling centre-right’s coalition partner. In a bid to stamp out corruption in the country, opposition party, the Pirate party are campaigning for more transparency and radical institutional reform.
