What is the ‘Crack Cancer’ challenge that has sports figures breaking eggs on their heads?

Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world.

You may have seen some videos or photos on social media and sports sites like ours of very famous people having eggs cracked over their heads on purpose with the hashtag #CrackCancer. That has included sports figures from on-air personalities to NFL players and coaches to pro golfers.

If so, and if you’ve wondered what was up with all of that, don’t be alarmed. We’re here to help with a look at the story behind the videos that have gone viral.

What’s the Crack Cancer Challenge?

It’s like the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge, but it involves eggs and it’s to raise money to fight pediatric brain cancer.

What’s the story behind this challenge?

It began with the Willie Strong Foundation, which was started in honor of Willie Hughes. He died at 12 years old after a battle with glioblastoma. Hughes’ family then started the Crack Cancer Challenge to raise awareness and money in the hopes of finding a cure.

How does it work?

Simply film yourself getting a raw egg cracked on your head (or crack it on yourself) and call out some people to do the same, who will then challenge others. Then, post it to social media with #CrackCancer.

Who’s done it?

So many people! Here’s Redskins coach Jay Gruden:

The Bears’ Chuck Pagano:

Vikings QB Kirk Cousins:

The Panthers’ Ron Rivera:

ESPN’s Adam Schefter:

Some Los Angeles Dodgers:

Good Morning Football‘s Kay Adams:

Golfer J.T. Griffin:
