What is the backstop? Google's year in search results revealed for the UK

Google have today revealed their 'Year In Search' results, and it makes for some interesting reading.

The results showed that the question 'What is the backstop?' ranked as the second most asked 'What is...?' question on Google in 2019.

It was revealed that searches for the backstop peaked at the start of this year and that the highest percentage of searches came from Northern Ireland.

The backstop, which was designed to prevent a hard border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland following the UK leaving the EU, became the main sticking point in Brexit negotiations.

The data also showed that Girls Aloud singer Nadine Coyle was the second most searched musician in the UK, with interest in the Derry-born star peaking in November, as she took part in I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here!

It was also revealed that the Rugby World Cup topped the overall list of searches in the UK, while Avengers Endgame also ranked highly.

Game of Thrones and Line of Duty - both of which are filmed in Northern Ireland - were among the Top 5 TV searches in 2019.

The most Googled questions of 2019 in the UK were 'how to watch the Champions League final' and 'how to watch Game of Thrones.'

For news events, 'Notre Dame', 'iPhone 11' and 'Revoke Article 50 petition' were the top searches of the year.

The Year In Search results also revealed that political questions such as 'how to vote in European elections' and 'how to register to vote' ranked highly in the UK.
