What is Rosh Hashanah and how is it celebrated?

It's one of the most important celebrations in the Jewish calendar, but what exactly is Rosh Hashanah?

Rosh Hashanah is the Jewish New Year and the first of the Jewish High Holy Days.

It marks the start of the civil year in Jewish teachings and is the anniversary of the creation of the first man and woman in the Hebrew Bible, Adam and Eve.

The biblical name for Rosh Hashanah is Yom Teruah, which translates as "day of shouting/blasting."

But how does the Jewish community traditionally celebrate the holiday of Rosh Hashanah?

Here is what you need to know about Rosh Hashanah.

There are a number of traditions that are associated with Rosh Hashanah.

A staple is the sounding of a cleaned-out ram's horn known as the shofar, which follows the teachings in the Torah.

Other customs include attending services at synagogues and taking part in festival meals.

Customary foods at these meals include apples dipped in honey, which are symbolic of the sweetness to come in the new year.

Other popular foods include dates, leek, spinach, gourd, and black-eyed peas, along with pumpkin-filled pastries.

Another food that is often a centrepiece is the Pomegranate fruit as it can symbolise fertility for the new year.

A traditional greeting during this religious holiday is to say Shanah Tovah , which translates from Hebrew to English to mean "good new year".

Alternatively, a Yiddish greeting could be "a gut yor" which means in English: "a good year".

Rosh Hashanah 2021 is from September 6 to September 8 2021.
