What is Operation Goodison Exercise? Fans still buzzing over long-standing stadium message

Although it's been a familiar sound for the Merseyside match-going public for over three decades it seems that the Everton stadium public address announcement of 'Operation Goodison Exercise' seems to have intrigued many armchair fans.

Just a week on from visiting Chelsea supporters being taken aback by 'Operation Anfield Excercise' across Stanley Park, the ground safety message pricked the ears of those not used to hearing the long-standing audio sequence.

Like 'Operation Anfield Exercise', 'Operation Goodison Exercise' is is a drill for the stewards, who must be ready to deal with an emergency at a moment's notice, and the announcement acts as an instruction for stewards to get into their correct positions inside the stadium.

At the same time, the turnstiles around the ground are tested to ensure they are functioning properly in case a mass exodus from the stadium is required, making sure supporters can leave quickly but safely.

Beginning with an airport-style 'ding dong' chime, there are three separate elements to the sequence.

  1. Stand by for Operation Goodison Exercise
  2. Commence Operation Goodison Exercise
  3. Operation Goodison Exercise complete
