What is Noughts and Crosses on BBC? Malorie Blackman book adapted for new TV drama

Thursday nights aren't typically the strongest of nights for TV dramas but that looks set to change with the debut on Noughts and Crosses on BBC1 this week.

Based on Malorie Blackman's very popular book of the same name, Noughts + Crosses follows two young people Sephy and Callum, who are divided by their colour but united by love.

Sephy is a member of the Cross ruling class and daughter of powerful Home Secretary Kamal Hadley, while Callum is of the Nought lower class and son of their housekeeper Meggie McGregor.

At the start of episode 1 of the new BBC drama, Callum is angered when his friend is attacked by police officers during a night out but his parents tell him to do nothing, otherwise he may jeopardise his entry into an elite military academy.

But an unexpected reunion with old school friend Sephy, a member of the ruling class, ignites a spark that both of them find difficult to ignore.

The Noughts & Crosses cast includes Masali Baduza and Jack Rowan in the leading roles of Sephy and Callum, while there are also appearances from Helen Baxendale, Paterson Joseph and Shaun Dingwall amongst others.

As well as the relationship between Sephy and Callum, Noughts and Crosses also looks at his brother Jude is more eager than ever to change the unjust system he has grown up in and regularly takes his anger out on the police enforcing the laws and those who look down on him.

Noughts and Crosses gets going on BBC1 at 9pm on Thursday, March 5.
