What is happening with Bristol's new Moxy 'boutique' hotel at foot of M32?

A brand new Moxy ‘boutique’ hotel in St Paul’s near the M32 motorway was expected to open in early 2020 - but no work seems to have taken place on the site for months.

Plans for the seven-storey, 214-room hotel , which would be located at the foot of the M32 opposite the Cabot Circus car park, were first revealed nearly two years ago.

The scheme has come from Dutch international hotel developer Vastint Hospitality through agent Atkins Global - which has offices at Aztec West - for the hotel at Newfoundland Circus.

It would be a Moxy Hotel – Marriott’s brand which targets the three-star market.

Work to clear the site began in February last year - despite the fact planning permission had still not been agreed at the time.

Construction vehicles have been spotted on the site in the 12 months since then and hoardings have also been put up – with one even proclaiming ‘site under construction for new Moxy hotel’.

Bristol City Council granted permission for the scheme earlier this year, with work to build the hotel expected to start soon as the hotel is expected to open early next year.

But since then it does not appear that any work has taken place at the site and there is definitely no indication a huge new hotel will be built in the near future.

According to the Moxy website, the Bristol site will be one of just seven hotels of its kind in England.

Four hotels are already open to customers, with the other three - including Bristol - planned to open either late 2019 or early 2020.

A description of the hotel offering included in the application says: "Moxy provides an opportunity to diversify the city centre’s hotel offering through the provision of small scale, boutique hotels or high quality hotels.

“Moxy’s focus is on the millennial traveller, who understands that style can be delivered at attractive prices.”

The building would be made up of modular units and ten of the 214 rooms would be ‘deluxe’ rooms.

Boutique hotels are normally small-scale, focusing on style and sited in a fashionable location and the term is not usually used for a multi-storey hotel with hundreds of rooms.
