What is Football Shirt Friday? Gary Lineker promotes campaign to support Bobby Moore Fund

The Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research UK is, once again, asking people to wear their favourite football shirts to work — Friday, April 21 — to help raise money to beat bowel cancer.

The annual Football Shirt Friday asks people to don their colours and donate money for vital research into the disease that took Bobby’s life in 1993, at the age of 51.

The inspiration for the campaign comes from the image of Bobby swapping shirts with Pele in 1970.

A number of famous names, including Gary Lineker, have already taken to Twitter to encourage fans to get behind the campaign.

In a tweet, Lineker said: “It is #FootballShirtFriday today — a day we can unite against bowel cancer in support of the excellent, life-saving work the [Bobby Moore Fund] does. Got a few shirts I can choose from.”

Former English goalkeeper David Andrew Seaman MBE, on the other hand, tweeted: “Its #FootballShirtFriday! Please get involved and help tackle bowel cancer by wearing your favourite football shirt, sharing a picture to social media, and donating to the Bobby Moore Fund. Join the squad!!”

How can I support Football Shirt Friday?

Supporting the charitable organisation is easy. All you have to do is put your favourite football shirt on today and share photos on social media.

You can also donate money to help Cancer Research UK tackle bowel cancer and help change the lives of the people who have been diagnosed with the illness.

How much you donate is up to you and your budget. You can either select one of the pre-determined donation amounts from the website or enter the amount you can afford.

The charity has a handy pack full of fundraising materials, too, should you wish to raise some money for the cause.
