What is Diwali and when is it being celebrated this year?

The festival of Diwali - also known as the Festival of Lights - is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.

It falls on a different day each year, in either October or November, as the date is determined by the moon.

The festival always falls on the 15th day of the Hindu calendar's holiest month, Kartika.

To celebrate people light candles and set off fireworks, to mark the triumph of good over evil.

What are the five days of Diwali?

Day 1: Dhanteras

Day 2: Naraka Chaturdasi

Day 3: Amavasya (the new moon day)

Day 4: It has many meanings but in Gujarat it is celebrated as the start of the new year.

Day 5: Bhai Duj
