What is direct provision? New podcast Modern Problem explores one of Ireland's most controversial systems

A groundbreaking new podcast has been making waves in helping people understand Ireland's controversial direct provision system.

Modern Problem has been rocketing up the charts since its release at the end of May and has been highly praised for laying the issue out in an easily digestible way.

This year marked 20 years since direct provision was implemented in Ireland, and it is regularly criticised by human rights groups across the globe who describe it as inhumane.

The system accommodates thousands of asylum seekers and refugees for free while their applications to be allowed stay in the country are in progress.

These applications can take years, and in the meantime some those waiting for them are unable to work, are left to live off €38.80 a week, and can be subject to sub-standard conditions.

Despite it being around for two decades many people don't understand exactly what it is, how it came to be, and who it's affecting.

Now Cork-based journalist Jane McNamara has decided to take the bull by the horns and release a podcast aimed at exploring and explaining its ins and outs.

The system currently houses over 6,000 people with McNamara saying it's mere existence is a "reflection of who we are in society".

She said: “With calls to ‘end direct provision’ growing louder as the protests continue, it is more important than ever that we understand exactly what it is, and why and how it began."

Upon its launch it rose straight into the top tiers of the Irish charts with the first episode taking a broad look at the system before the second introduced some of the people who are living in it.

You can find Modern Problem it on all major streaming sites such as  SpotifyItunes, and  Stitcher.

You can also follow updates on the Podcast's social media pages including  TwitterFacebook, and  Instagram.
