What is Dalgona coffee and how do you make it?

If you've noticed pictures of thick, creamy, dessert-like coffee on your social media feeds - it's probably Dalgona coffee.

The viral, easy-to-make coffee trend has been dominating Instagram and TikTok for the past few months.

But what is it exactly?

The viral drink consists of hot or cold milk topped with a smooth, meringue-like coffee foam.

And according to YouTube coffee connoisseur James Hoffman, the popular drink was named when South Korean actor Jung Il-woo tasted the coffee in Macao and likened its taste to Dalgona (or ppopgi) - a honey-comb flavoured Korean street food.

It's Instagram-worthy look has captured the attention of thousands of coffee drinkers across the world - and it's deceptively simple to make.

The Dalgona 'foam' is made from just three everyday household ingredients and you can craft the whole drink at home in three foolproof steps.

What ingredients and equipment do I need?

The most important piece of equipment you'll need for Dalgona coffee is a whisk.

You can use either a manual hand whisk, an electric whisk or a standing mixer if you're marking large quantities.

You can change the quantities of coffee, sugar and water depending on how much Dalgona coffee topping foam you want to make - just make sure they're all equal measurements.

Using a high quality instant coffee will add to the flavour but you can also add extras including topping powders, flavoured syrups and coconut sugar.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tsp of your favourite instant coffee
  • 2 tsp sugar
  • 2 tsp of boiled water
  • Milk or milk substitute (enough to fill approximately three quarters of your glass)
  • Ice cubes (if you want to make the iced version of the drink)

Equipment:

  • Whisk
  • Teaspoon
  • Mixing bowl
  • Coffee glass

What's the three-step method?

Recipes may vary online, but here's an easy to follow, three-step method:

1. Add to a mixing bowl two units of your favourite instant coffee, two units of sugar and two units of boiled water.

2. Whisk until a thick, meringue-like brown foam is created (the time it takes for the foam to form will vary depending on if you're using a manual hand whisk or an electric one).

3. Spoon the foam onto a glass of hot or iced milk (or milk substitute).
