What is Chinese New Year 2022, when is it celebrated and what is my animal sign?

The Chinese New Year is soon upon us and millions across the globe will be celebrating.

You may have heard of the 12 animals on the Chinese zodiac that are attached to certain years - and this is what it is all about.

For example, those born in 1998 are the Year of the Tiger - which is being celebrated this year - whilst those born in 2020 are the Year of the Rat.

One thing associated with Chinese New Year is a host of superstitions which, legend has it, dictates how your next 12 months will go.

According to the traditions, washing clothes, using scissors and sweeping floors are some of the easier omens to avoid during this period, reports ExaminerLive.

As well as this, crying children are also considered an omen and something you'll very much want to avoid.

But what is the Chinese New Year, when is it celebrated and what is your animal sign?

When is Chinese New Year 2022 celebrated?

This date—unlike January 1—varies, with it falling on February 1 this year compared to February 12 last year.

The festivities, according to Yorkshire Live, usually begin the day before the new year and continue until the Lantern Festival which occurs on the 15th.

The date is then determined by the lunar calendar which always falls between 21 to 51 days behind the international calendar for new year.

Each Chinese New Year is characterised by one of 12 animals that appear in the Chinese zodiac – last year was the Year of the Ox and this year belongs to the Tiger.

What are the Chinese New Year 2022 animals?

There are 12 in total with 2022 being the Year of the Tiger.

Those born in the Year of the Tiger are characterised as being brave, competitive and confident.

Conversely, those born in the Year of the Tiger can be unpredictable, irritable, and overindulgent.
