What is Britbox? How do I get it and what can I watch on the streaming platform?

Britbox is a streaming service which includes all the latest and all-time best from British TV and film. It allows you to watch a range of video content, free from ad-breaks, including British classics such as Only Fools and Horses and Doctor Who to brand new original dramas such as Hotel Portofino and Magpie Murders.

That's not all, a Britbox subscription gives you access to exclusive content too. The Ipcress File, currently airing on ITV, has all six episodes already available to watch on the platform.

The streaming service was first launched in the UK by BBC and ITV in 2019, but had been available in the US since 2017. In March 2022, it was announced Britbox had reached 733,000 subscribers in the UK.

It is said to have more than two million subscribers across Australia, Canada, USA, South Africa and the UK and will be made available in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Norway in 2022.

So how can you get access to Britbox? how much does it cost and what can you watch on the streaming platform? Here are all the details you need:

What is Britbox?

Britbox is a streaming service - similar to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+. It is said to feature "the biggest collection of British content available on any streaming service".

It gives viewers access to a variety of shows from ITV and BBC, box-sets from All 4, British films from Film 4, factual and entertainment content from Channel 5 and original British comedy programmes from Comedy Central UK.

The streaming service already has a host of original shows lined up this year, including an adaption of Agatha Christie’s Why Didn’t They Ask Evans? which will star Lucy Boynton and Will Poulter and cameos from Emma Thompson and Jim Broadbent.

A new comedy-drama has also been teased, titled The Dry. The eight-part series will star Ciaran Hinds, Pom Boyd and Roisin Gallagher.

How do I get Britbox and how much does Britbox cost?

There are two ways you can pay for your Britbox subscription. Either monthly at a cost of £5.99 per month or a yearly subscription which costs £59.99 which allows you 12 months access for the cost of 10 months.

The streaming platform is currently offering a seven-day free trial too, which means billing will only start at the end of your free trail.

Britbox can be accessed online via your a computer on the web, on a mobile or tablet. It can also be accessed on Smart TVs, streaming devices such as Fire TV, Apple TV, or by casting using Google Chromecast or AirPlay.

What can I watch on the Britbox streaming platform?

Britbox is home to a number of films including, Finding Your Feet, The Inbetweeners Movie, The Carry On Collection, Educating Rita and Trainspotting just to name a few.

It also has a wide range of TV boxsets from comedies to dramas such as Absolutely Fabulous, Ackley Bridge, Friday Night Dinner, Agatha Christie's Poirot, 00s prison drama Bad Girls and the entire 28 series of Doctor Who.

You can watch exclusive content including The Ipcress File, which only started broadcasting on ITV on Sunday, March 6, but all episodes are currently available on Britbox.

The new ITV thriller Our House starring Line of Duty's Martin Compston is due to launch on March 7 and the full series will be available to watch on Britbox from 9.30pm on the same day.

The streaming platform is also known for its original content. The 80s satirical TV puppet show Spitting Image, was revived into a Brtibox original in 2020.
