What is Blackout Tuesday and why are people posting black squares on Instagram?

You may have been scrolling through social media today to a lot of empty profiles and black squares filling your Instagram and social media feeds.

This is because today is Blackout Tuesday, a day in which the public, celebrities, companies, sports stars and the music industry have come together and vowed not to post on their accounts.

It is also part of the Black Lives Matter movement which has come into more significant prominence in recent days following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

Blackout Tuesday is a way of people showing their solidarity, support the ongoing protests and give attention to black voices that may not always be heard.

Today's campaign was originally organised by Jamila Thomas, senior director of marketing at Atlantic Records, and Brianna Agyemang, a senior artist campaign manager at Platoon.

Using the hashtag #TheShowMustBePaused, they called for members of the music industry to "take a beat for an honest reflective, and productive conversation about what actions we need to collectively take to support the black community."

Following the #BlackoutTuesday and #BlackLivesMatter social media tags is also being used as a way to educate others and help people to understand what is going on and how they can be the ones to help enforce change.

TV and radio stations have also taken part in the event by pausing broadcasts and playing out special programming in support of the black community in the UK and around the world.
