What is a state funeral? Hundreds of thousands of people sign Captain Sir Tom Moore petition

A petition which has been launched for Captain Sir Tom Moore to receive a state funeral is quickly gathering pace.

More than 200,000 people have put their name to the petition started by Sam Watson, from Manchester.

It was launched following Captain Sir Tom's death on Tuesday (February 2), aged 100.

The war veteran became a lockdown hero when he raised a staggering £39 million for NHS Charities Together during the first lockdown last year.

Now, plenty of people are calling for Sir Tom's memory to be commemorated with statues, coins and more.

It also included the petition for Sir Tom to have a state funeral which is a public funeral to honour those of national importance - for example, monarchs.

But in certain circumstances others can have a state funeral if approved by the government with a vote in parliament.

Mr Watson's Change.org petition reads: "With great sadness a world hero has passed.

"The U.K. government can pass a vote to hold a state funeral, usually held for monarchs or distinguished individuals. He fought with honour and bravery in war, and during our darkest hour in modern times he raised £33m for the NHS.

"Covid-19 has clouded the world, but this man deserves a special send off to bring a candle to his past, present and future."

The last state funeral to be held for members of the royal family was for King George VI in 1952.

The last outside the royal family was Sir Winston Churchill in 1965.

However, there are also ceremonial funerals, the last being for Baroness Margaret Thatcher in 2013. These share characteristics of a state funeral but without the title.

As well as the funeral service itself, a state funeral also features a gun carriage to transport the coffin between locations, accompanied by a procession of military bands and detachments along with mourners and other officials.
