What is a lockdown and what you can and can't do in Scotland now

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon announced that Scotland is in immediate lockdown - echoing Prime Minister Boris Johnson's plans to stop the spread of coronavirus.

The leaders said the new measures were "essential" to both save lives and protect the NHS from becoming overloaded.

The plans were brought into force after deaths in Scotland hit 14, following the 499th positive test result.

Below is what you can and can't do, as the government try to stop the outbreak of the deadly COVID-19 strain.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
- Leave your home once a day to shop for basic necessities, like food or medicine.
- Exercise outside daily, like a run, walk or bike ride in a park, as long as you are not in a group of two or more.
- Attend medical appointments.
- Provide care for someone else or help a vulnerable person.
- Travel to and from work, but only if it is "absolutely necessary" and you cannot work from home.
- Attend a funeral if you are immediate family.

WHAT YOU CAN'T DO
- Gather in groups of two or more, unless you live alongside the people you're with.
- Meet up with friends, family or loved ones if they live in a different house.
- Shop for non-essential items.
- Visit amenities such as libraries, gyms, churches or mosques, which have to close from tonight.

HOW IT WILL BE ENFORCED
- Police can issue fines and break-up gatherings of more than two people.
- All shops selling non-essential goods will close.
- All gatherings of more than two people in public, unless they live together, will stop.
- All social events, including weddings and all other ceremonies, except funerals, are also scrapped.
- Parks will stay open for exercise, but gatherings of more than two people from different households are banned.

HOW LONG WILL IT LAST?
- The initial period is set for three weeks, but this could be cut short or extended, depending on how the virus spreads.
