KEIR Starmer is expected to announce digital ID is set to be made compulsory for all adults in the UK.
The proposals are part of the UK Government's plan to tackle illegal migration, but have been met by backlash from campaigners amid privacy concerns.
What is a digital ID?
A digital ID is a government-issued form of identification.
If it is rolled out, it would be compulsory for all adults in the UK.
The so-called "Brit card" would verify a citizen's right to live and work in the UK.
Anyone starting a new job would be required to "show" the card, which is in a digital form.
The ID app would automatically check their right to work against UK Government records.
A system would be used to cross-reference the stored identity against company tax records to identify firms with workers who had not completed checks.
Digital ID is believed to be more difficult to fake than physical ID such as driving licences and passports, which workers are required to show when they begin employment.
It is understood a digital ID card will also be required to rent a home.
