What is A Confession on ITV? New drama ready to grip millions of viewers

ITV are set to do it again. In the same year that they've had us on the edges of our seats with the likes of Cheat and The Bay, the channel are ready to pull another gripping drama out of the bag in the shape of A Confession.

With an A-list cast featuring Martin Freeman and Imelda Staunton, the suspenseful contemporary drama centres on the thought-provoking true crime story of an investigator determined to bring a killer to justice - whatever the cost.

In 2011, after a night out with friends, 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan disappeared. When her worried boyfriend reports her missing, Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher (Martin Freeman) begins to place together her last movements.

Believing Sian may still be alive, Fulcher initiates an urgent full-scale search operation and edges closer to a chief suspect, local taxi driver Christopher Halliwell.

However, once under arrest, what Halliwell has to say steers the investigation in a completely unforeseen direction, leaving Fulcher on the precipice of a life changing choice between protocol and justice.

A Confession, starting on ITV on Monday, September 2 , raises important questions on how we want our police to behave - should Fulcher be praised as a courageous officer fighting for the life of a missing woman or punished for riding roughshod over the law?

The new six-part drama's cast also stars ex Eastenders actor Joe Absolom in the role of Halliwell; Siobhan Finneran (Downtown Abbey, Benidorm and Happy Valley) as Elaine Pickford and Wallsend actor David Nellis as Fulcher's second in command, Senior Investigating Officer Steve Kirby.
